FAQs

Keith Gramlich Piano Service
Piano Tuning & Repair on Long Island and the NY Metro Area: (917) 757-4207  Wurli1@live.com

❓How often should my piano be tuned?

Most pianos should be tuned once or twice a year, depending on use and the climate. In homes with changing seasons (hello, Long Island!), humidity swings can pull your piano out of tune even if it’s not played often. Regular tuning preserves pitch, tone, and overall health.

❓Do you service both upright and grand pianos?

Yes! Keith services all types of acoustic pianos, including:

  • Upright (spinet, console, studio, full upright)
  • Baby grand
  • Medium and concert grand
  • Church and institutional pianos

He does not tune digital pianos—but he’s happy to help advise on care and placement if you’re combining acoustic and digital setups.

❓Can you tune a fish?

🎣 Only if it’s a piano tuna.
(If your upright smells like seafood, though, we may need to call in backup.)

❓Do you work with baby grands?

Absolutely. Keith has tuned everything from living room heirlooms to concert hall workhorses. And yes, baby grands are welcome—no lullabies required.

❓My piano hasn’t been tuned in decades. Can it still be fixed?

Yes! Keith loves working with neglected or forgotten instruments. They may need a pitch raise, some minor repairs, or careful regulation—but many old pianos still have great music in them.

❓How long does tuning take?

A standard tuning takes about 60–90 minutes. If the piano is severely out of tune or additional repairs are needed, it could take longer. Keith will always discuss what’s involved before he starts.

❓Do I need to be home while you work?

Not necessarily. As long as the piano is accessible and the space is quiet enough to hear pitch clearly, you’re free to go about your day. Keith has worked in homes, schools, churches, and studios across Queens and Nassau County with all kinds of setups.

❓How much does a tuning cost?

Prices vary depending on the piano’s condition and location. A standard tuning starts around [Insert Price], with additional fees for:

  • Pitch corrections
  • Minor on-site repairs
  • Long-neglected pianos
  • Institutions with multiple instruments

❓Do you repair broken keys, buzzing, or squeaky pedals?

Yes. Keith can usually fix issues like:

  • Sticky or unresponsive keys
  • Noisy pedals
  • Buzzing or rattling notes
  • Broken or loose strings
  • Hammer or damper issues

Many minor repairs are done on the spot. For larger repairs, Keith will discuss options and timelines with you directly.

❓Do you offer voicing or regulation?

Yes! If your piano plays unevenly or has lost its character, voicing and regulation can help:

  • Regulation adjusts the touch and responsiveness
  • Voicing shapes tone and balance across all registers

Keith uses specialized tools and techniques to restore the feel and sound that fits you and your space.

❓Can I play while you’re tuning?

Only if you’re trying to summon chaos.
Keith needs quiet to focus on precise tuning. You’ll get your concert moment once he’s finished—promise.

❓Do you offer appraisals or inspections?

Yes. Keith provides pre-purchase inspections, estate evaluations, and informal appraisals for insurance or resale purposes. He’ll help you understand what a piano is worth—and whether it’s a deal or a dud.

❓Do you move pianos?

Keith doesn’t move pianos himself, but he can:

  • Recommend reliable local movers
  • Help you prepare your piano for moving
  • Return for post-move tuning and inspection

❓Which areas do you serve?

Keith proudly serves all of Queens and Nassau County, including:

  • Flushing, Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck, Whitestone
  • Garden City, Great Neck, Hempstead, Mineola, Rockville Centre, and more

If you’re nearby and unsure, just ask—he’s always happy to help.

❓What if my piano just “doesn’t sound right”?

Trust your ears! If something seems off—whether it’s pitch, tone, or feel—Keith can diagnose and explain what’s going on. Sometimes it’s a quick fix; other times it’s a matter of tuning, voicing, or repair. Either way, you’ll get a straight answer.

❓Is it worth repairing an old piano?

That depends! Some older pianos are beautiful instruments worth restoring, while others may have structural damage or poor soundboards. Keith offers pre-repair evaluations and honest advice—he won’t recommend work unless it makes musical and financial sense.

❓Do you offer piano appraisals or pre-purchase inspections?

Yes. If you’re buying a used piano or settling an estate, Keith can inspect the instrument and provide a written or verbal evaluation. This includes:

  • Condition report
  • Estimated repair needs
  • Replacement value
  • Purchase advice (for buyers)

❓Do you tune digital pianos or keyboards?

No—digital keyboards don’t require tuning. But Keith is happy to answer questions about placement, maintenance, and acoustic vs. digital options.
